How to get to Santa Margherita Ligure

1. Visa Requirements

General Note : Italy is part of the Schengen Area

American Citizens :

  • No visa required for short stays in Italy of up to 90 days within a 180-day period (for tourism or attending the wedding).

  • Travelers must have a valid U.S. passport, with at least 3 months’ validity beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area.

EU / Schengen Citizens

  • No passport or visa required to enter Italy — you can use a national ID card or passport.

  • You can stay and travel freely within Italy and other Schengen countries under freedom of movement.

United Kingdom Citizens

  • No visa required for short stays (up to 90 days within 180 days) for tourism, visiting family/friends, or business.

  • UK citizens must travel with a valid passport.

  • New travel authorization: UK nationals will also need ETIAS authorization starting late 2026 (you apply online before traveling).

Indian Citizens

  • Visa required for travel to Italy, even for short visits. Indian passport holders must apply before travel for a Schengen short-stay visa (up to 90 days).

  • Schengen visas must be obtained via the Italian embassy/consulate or a visa application centre in India.

  • No visa-on-arrival option is available.

  • Typical requirements include: valid passport, completed application, photos, travel itinerary, proof of funds, and travel insurance (requirements vary).

Important Notes for All Travelers

  • All non-EU travelers should ensure their passport is valid at least 3 months beyond the date they plan to leave the Schengen Area.

  • If plan to stay longer than 90 days (e.g., extended visit, study, work), you must apply for the appropriate visa/permit before arriving.

  • Visiting multiple Schengen countries counts toward the same 90/180 day rule.

2. Nearest Airport

Santa Margherita Ligure does not have its own airport — guests will need to fly into a nearby major airport first. The closest airport is:

Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) — about 30 km (≈19 mi) from Santa Margherita Ligure.

Most guests from the U.S. will connect via a major European hub such as:

  • Frankfurt (FRA)

  • Amsterdam (AMS)

  • Paris (CDG)

  • London (LHR)

  • Madrid (MAD)

These hubs have frequent flights from the U.S., and then onward connections to Genoa.

If flights to Genoa are limited or pricey, guests can also consider:

Pisa (PSA) — ~2.5 h by train to Santa Margherita Ligure.
Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) — ~3–4 h by train.
Rome (FCO) — ~4–5 h by train (not as close but big flight options).

3. Train from Airport to Santa Margherita Ligure

From Genoa Airport (GOA)

  • Take the short “Airlink” bus shuttle from the airport terminal to Genova Sestri Ponente Aeroporto station.

  • Then catch a Trenitalia regional train to Santa Margherita Ligure–Portofino station.

    • Journey is about 1 h 10 min.

Tip: Tickets can be bought at the airport’s Trenitalia machines or online. The combined “Airlink + train” ticket option is often easiest.

From Pisa

There are regular trains from Pisa Airport (PSA) station to Santa Margherita Ligure, taking roughly 2–2.5 hours with at least one change.

From Milan Airports

  • From Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) take a train via Milan Centrale to Santa Margherita Ligure (about 3.5–4.5 h total).

4. Getting to Santa Margherita from Milan Airport

Taxi / Private Transfer – Milan Airport → Santa Margherita Ligure

From Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)

  • Distance: ~ 210 – 215 km (132–134 mi) one-way.

  • Typical driving time:
    ~ 2 h 15 min – 2 h 45 min depending on traffic and conditions (sometimes closer to ~2 h 30 min).

Estimated Taxi/Private Transfer Costs

There isn’t a fixed standard city taxi rate for this long route, so prices vary based on company, vehicle type, and booking method — but typical private transfer estimates include:

  • ≈ €350–€450 one-way for a standard private car (1–3 passengers).

  • Prices can be higher for larger vans/minivans or premium services.

Because this is a long-distance transfer (~2.5 hrs), many guests prefer to pre-book a private transfer service in advance for certainty on price and pickup arrangements rather than trying to hail a regular taxi at the airport.

Alternative: Train (Often Cheaper)

For guests open to public transport:

  • Train from Malpensa to Santa Margherita Ligure: typically ~3 – 4 hours with at least one connection (via Milano Centrale).

  • Typical cost: trains often start around €25–€40 one-way if booked in advance.

5. Taxi or Private Transfer

Some guests may prefer not to use trains, especially with luggage. Options include:

  • Taxi or rideshare from Genoa Airport directly to Santa Margherita Ligure (~30–40 min).

  • Pre-booked private transfer — convenient if arriving late or in a group

6. Car Hire

Car hire from any airport can be ideal if you want flexibility for exploring Liguria (including Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino, Cinque Terre, etc.). The easiest place to start is at the Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA), which has several hire companies right at or near the terminal.

7. Station & Town Access

Once in town:

  • The Santa Margherita Ligure–Portofino train station is a short walk from the waterfront, hotels and restaurants.

  • Portofino, Rapallo and nearby beaches are easily reached by bus, ferry or short taxi ride (great for wedding events).

8. Handy Tips for Guests

  • Train tickets: Regional trains don’t require reservations, but high-speed or long-distance trains do so book in advance where possible.

  • Taxis in Italy: Often don’t use meters in smaller towns, so agree a rate beforehand.

  • Language: Italian is spoken locally — a few phrase basics help, but most train and airport staff speak English.
